SUSTAINABILITY

The Inn at the Abbey has been planned with our family's sustainability principals in mind and has been designed to achieve LEED Certification upon completion. The key sustainability principals for this project are highlighted below.

WATER CONSERVATION

Graywater will be captured, processed, and re-used on the property for vineyard and landscape irrigation needs where feasible. Water-efficient fixtures will be installed throughout the new and existing buildings to further reduce water dependency.

TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT PLAN

On this site, we will commit to operational incentives, such as ride-sharing, community shuttles, employee vanppools and employee incentives to reduce vehicle miles traveled. We will also use technology to manage and reduce employee and visitor trips. Lastly, given the proximity to the future Vine Trail, special emphasis will be placed on bike riding incentives to further reduce vehicle miles traveled.

CERTIFIED GREEN BUSINESS

The Inn at the Abbey will participate in the Napa County Green Business Program, which certifies that we will operate in an environmentally-responsible manner. This program helps local businesses conserve energy and water, minimize waste, prevent pollution, and shrink their carbon footprint.

RECYCLED MATERIALS

Where possible, recycled and/or local materials will be used throughout building and site construction.

WATER EFFICIENT LANDSCAPE

The project will adhere to the current requirements for water efficient landscaping which minimizes overwatering and runoff, develops water budgets, automates irrigation, creates sustainable maintenance practices, encourages the use of recycled water and educates water users on the property.

LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT

Low impact development or “LID” helps efficiently manage stormwater by recreating natural landscape features and minimizing imperiousness to create functional and appealing site drainage that treats stormwater as a resource rather than a waste product. This project has been designed using LID principles and practices so that water can be managed in a way that reduces the impact of built areas and promotes natural movement of water.

The Jackson Family's Commitment to Sustainability

The Jackson family believes that our mission — to make the world’s best wines, from the best vineyards, crafted by hand with integrity — is strengthened by our sustainability goals. We understand that achieving excellence in how we manage our social and environmental impacts is in part dependent on our ability to evaluate and report on ourselves. As a family company it is vital to demonstrate accountability and authenticity behind our claims that we are not only a responsible business, but a leader in sustainable winemaking. With our inaugural Jackson Family Responsibility Report, we hope to be an integral part of clarifying the conversation around wine sustainability.

Sustainability is not a new concept for us. We have farmed and made wine with this goal in mind since the beginning. With each year, our awareness has evolved, and with it our methodologies. We are proud of the significant progress we have made over the last eight years towards specific goals in the areas of environmental stewardship, employee engagement, and community involvement.

ON-SITE RENEWABLE ENERGY

Solar panels will be installed in several locations to provide clean, local, on-site, renewable power generation. Currently, Jackson Family Wines is the largest producer of solar energy in the wine industry.

BICYCLE-FRIENDLY DESIGN

With the Napa Valley Vine Trail planned along our western property boundary, we felt it was imperative to make this project as bicycle friendly as possible. Along with direct connections to the Vine Trail, the project will include bicycle racks and bicycle storage for guests and employees. Directional signs and information on biking in Napa will be abundant.

PUBLIC TRANSIT ACCESSIBILITY

Freemark Abbey is located directly adjacent to a a Route 29 bus stop for service operated by The Vine. The project will be designed to provide convenient and safe access for all transit riders.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE FRIENDLY

Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations will be located in several of the guest and employee parking areas that serve the property. Electric vehicles will be utilized on-site for staff and valeting guests where necessary.

PRESERVATION OF AG LANDS

Development is planned entirely on areas that were previously disturbed or developed, and will not impact natural open spaces or existing agricultural uses.

EXCEED ENERGY STANDARDS

Through use of energy-efficient fixtures and materials, this project will exceed the rigorous standards currently in place and achieve CALGREEN Tier 1. All existing and new lighting on site will be replaced with compact fluorescent (CF) or light emitting diode (LED) fixtures. Cool roofing material will be used to reduce heat-gain and save on annual air conditioning energy needs. Deciduous shade trees will be planted in close proximity to new buildings to cool buildings in summer and allow sunlight to heat buildings in winter.
